Continuations: Apple App Store Versus Facebook Apps

  • ooohyeaaah! · 1 year ago
Facebook does have an app approval process, and they too have been known to shutdown apps.

Have they shut down apps for reasons other than external lawsuits?

A simple search for "facebook shuts down *" would have shown you that there's numerous apps that have been shut down! Most notably those by Slide and RockYou.

Thanks - I was responding by email to the earlier comment and am still only on my blackberry. When I click through on your link all the top results are about Scrabulous with one about Top Friends for which I recall there was a security issue. Will look more when I am home tonight.

I don't think your physics-book metaphor is a good fit. A better fit might be, one book is about a simple area of physics, but makes it needlessly complex, while another is about a complex/contentious area of physics, making it understandable by undergrad physics majors. The latter is still more complex than the former, but the latter is a service/benefit for the user/reader, while the former is not a service.

I think it's actually too soon to comparatively judge the 2 groups. Their future behavior will be important. Apple has made some increasingly-open moves, e.g. more DRM-free music in iTunes, while Facebook has made some closed-protection moves (e.g. Google OpenSocial).

Completely agree with the point that it's too early too tell where these
will wind up. Still think that the difference even today is a lot
smaller than Umair's post made it out to be.
