Continuations: Reblogs and Comments in Peace and Harmony

I've been thinking the same thing about reblogs -- sometimes all I want to do is leave a quick addendum or comment without wholesale adopting an entire post on my own tumblog.

The endorsement element is even more important as I've begun to think of Tumblr as my space for whatever form of personal expression I feel like, supplanting Facebook as it becomes a place for both friends and professional contacts. Facebook's granular privacy settings are enormously helpful for segmenting people, but also make it kind of a pain to curate the stuff in profile . Mostly it feels like less of the blank canvas it used to be -- enter Tumblr.

Spot on--I have heard Marco argue vociferously against comments, but I still think Tumblr should make it easier for authors who want comments to add them. Leave the default to no comments, but the decision to add comments should be up to an author. As someone who recognizes the difference between reblogs and comments, I immediately setup discuss because I did not want to lose out on any valuable feedback from readers who wanted to share a thought but not necessarily reblog.

I run disqus for the same reason. So as you point out, folks already have this choice, but push button deployment of disqus and easy integration with templates would make that choice a lot easier.

I'm a much bigger fan of comments than reblogs. Mainly because comments can have a more complex structure (threading, immediate tie-in to the original post) which can then be collapsed into a reblog page (e.g., if you view my Backtype profile its essentially a blog of reblogs), but the reverse is not as easy.
